Sheriff’s Office Reports 32% Increase in

Thefts from Vehicles in Loudoun County

So far this year the Sheriff’s Office has investigated 736 larcenies from vehicles. A 32% increase during the same time period the previous year. “Larcenies from vehicles are often a crime of opportunity.  Locking your vehicle and removing or concealing high dollar items will greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim,” said Sheriff Steve Simpson.

KEEP YOUR VEHICLE LOCKED. Most stolen items are taken from vehicles that are left unlocked.

• Remove or put items out of sight, inside a lockable glove box or trunk.

• Park inside your garage or in an illuminated area.

• A visible GPS is an obvious target. Prowlers also look for any signs that one may be in your vehicle, such as a mount on the window or dashboard. Even the circle impression left on the windshield from the suction cup mount is enough for thieves to break-in. They assume a GPS is hidden somewhere inside.

Anyone with information about the perpetrators of these crimes is asked to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475. If the caller wishes to remain anonymous they should call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919. If the information leads to an arrest and indictment the caller could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1000.

Useful Tips
Sunny summer days are here!  This webpage usually offers tips for how to protect the value of our homes; but first, a reminder to protect what we value most in our neighborhood--our children.  Parents:  Please supervise and teach your children about traffic safety.  Drivers:  Please drive carefully, especially when backing out of your driveway.

Turn landscaping and gardening into a family affair!  Little kids love to dig in dirt and help plant things and watch them grow!
Please remember to check the Architectural Review Committee Guidelines for information on exterior decorative objects, landscaping your lot, vegetable gardens, etc.

Aside from keeping an eye on your tots and sprucing up your lots, take advantage of the mild weather to keep your homes looking well kept.  Below is a list of things that you can do to keep your homes looking new and attractive.
  • Sand and repaint your house numbers if the paint is flaking and fading.
  • Repaint your front stair rails if they are dull and showing rusts.
  • Clean and/or repaint your front door.
  • Get rid of overgrown weeds.
  • Power wash and seal your wooden deck to protect it from the hot/dry weather and keep it looking attractive.
  • Have your driveway sealed (get a couple of neighbors for a group discount! Prices range from $62 to $75)
  • Oil your garage door so that it operates more smoothly and quietly.  Oil the round pins that cause the wheels to turn.  Do not oil the wheel channels, as dirt may accumulate and may cause more friction.
  • Let fresh air and sunshine into your home but remember to change your filters so that your AC unit will operate more efficiently, and you will breathe in cleaner air.

If you are planning any home improvements such as adding on a deck, fence, storm door, etc., please remember to submit an ACR Application for any changes to the exterior of your home.  More information can be found in the ARC webpage.

Thank you to those who have purchased enough trash receptacles to hold their weekly refuse, and to those who have been bundling up their trash.  The neighborhood is generally cleaner and it is now rare to see litter on the common grounds!
