Why are they digging up the lawn?
To control the algae in the ponds
During the last four monthly BOD meetings, there has been discussion on the state of our ponds. As you may have noticed, there has been a considerable bloom of algae in the ponds, especially the pond on the right as you enter. Frequently, the entire surface of the pond is covered with algae.
During spring clean-up, residents removed most of the algae from the surface of that pond, however, within a week, it had returned. Take a stroll down to the edge of a pond, you can see that the entire bottom, along with everything in it, is covered in algae, including our resident turtle.
The BOD has approved measures to control the algae in a two stage process. Stage 1: This year, we install Sonic Algae Control devices. This should reduce the algae problem. Stage 2: Next year, we will install aeration devices to revive the oxygen level to normal. This will also help to control the algae. After all, we want our ponds to be attractive and not an eye sore.
Although these devices may sound like a something used by Captian Video, to fight Prince Spartak of the Black Planet, (broadcast in the 1950s, LIVE 5 days a week) it is actually cutting age technology. The ARC, specifically Tim Shulte, dedicated several months investigating the best solution. The recommendation of the sonic solution, although more expensive to install, will save us money in the long run compared to other solutions.
Back to the digging... That is the installation of underground electrical service to each pond, to provide power for the devices. That should be completed by the first week of July. The Sonic Algae Control devices will be installed shortly thereafter, when they arrive.
If you would like more information on the project you can request copies of the BOD minutes from LMA, or feel free to respond back to the ARC and we can provide additional information.
